It's complicated.

Blanchett walking the red carpet on Oscar night.  2.27.11
Dear Cate,
I'm totally torn. Totally totally.  I can't decide if I like your dress.  My feelings are complicated.  The craftsmanship is unreal - afterall - it's Givenchy.  And your bod looks terrific.  And the flutter of the hem, ooof.  So pretty.  But the yellow ish color of the "beads" ?!  And their texture?  Terrible.  I think ... ?  But again, it's complicated.
Always your girl (but torn on this one),
Ash

  1. Hmmm yes. At first sight, very pretty, buy not sure if it has that kind of fresh after taste we crave w Oscar beauty. Were there other complicated dresses? I missed it, sadly. Can't wait to watch it live some day... Hopefully w you :) talking about all of the prettiness and ugly dresses

  2. I agree. It's like I keep staring at the yellow stuff. what's that stuff called that you put on bathtubs, caulk? its looks like yellow caulk with shiny gold beads. but i think maybe its supposed to juxtapose the stereotypical prettiness of a flowy pastel dress. maybe she's too smart for us.

  3. I am a pro-dress partisan on this one. The beading is like a picture frame for her torso--commentary on the pseudo-artistic appropriation of female bodies. Or not. Anyway, I liked it because it was weird.

  4. Funny how I saw this shocking dress on Sunday night and said Ash better post on this but I couldnt decide if you would like or not. Looks like you cant decide either. I sure wouldnt call it a winner but CATE is.

  5. Cate is always a winner. Yes to that Laura love. But the texture of the "beads" is difficult and somewhat intolerable because it reminds me of 6th grade science slides of why teens should keep their pants on. That's my honesty room opinion. But I like what's going on with the whole female-form-"appropriation". That's interesting and so Cate to ask us to think when we're trying to un think w a wine glass in our laps. And Rach, when are we going to live in the same state so we can talk pretty dress talk?! I need it.

  6. the adjective ash is looking for here to describe the appearance is herpetic. they look like yellow herpetic lesions spreading over her back.

that said...i do still like the dress.

  7. thank you Dr. Bomsztyk. yellow herpetic lesions on Cate Blanchett's back, and we still like the dress; fashion is amazing. Perhaps Givenchy's creative director looked through medical journals' pictorial spread for inspiration?!

  8. I'm actually in-love with this, perhaps because I'm in-love with Cate, but also because it just wasn't the classic uncreative Oscar look (in the same way that I loved Tilda Swinton in her black dress at the 2008 Oscars http://stylefrizz.com/200802/tilda-swinton-black-dress-on-the-80th-academy-award-red-carpet/). I figured you wouldn't like it because you don't like yellow, so I was surprised it was the texture that put you over the edge. Personally I think the yellow bulbs look like barnacles on the bottom of a boat, but I still love it. I also love all the comments it generated.

  9. I would definitely say it has a barnacle look- so I guess I'm still neutral about yellow barnacles on cate's back. The pink is perfect though. Not too ballerina and perfectly matched to her skin tone. Hair cut is also very crisp and cute. She's so pretty

  10. I think her hair is a touch news anchory. Have to disagree w you Rach. When we call them "barnicles" - I like them too ...
